Data Story – Screen Usage influences on University Students

From the graphs produced that was sourced for the our time data the data has shown patterns between screen usage and the type of activities undertaken during screen based activities. Majority of the throughout the week that the data was collected was does not consist of screen use but a large quantity of that time is due to personal care where most of that time is spent asleep. From the time spent outside personal car including University attendance, University study, Social, recreation, sport, work and travel majority of that time is spent behind a screen.
The patterns in the data show that the influence of University and recreation/social time is dominant reason behind the amount of screen usage. The data has shown that a large quantity of of time doing University work is spent behind a screen proving that University study requires the use of screens in particular laptops and desktops. The data has also shown that majority of recreational time is spent behind a screen due to influences such as online gaming, Netflix, TV and social media. The Data shows time spent on social media and online messaging was mainly done via a mobile device and devices used for Nextflix and gaming were mainly spent using a laptop or desktop device. Assumptions behind the reasons could mean that most of the time Uni students played games and watched Netflix was spent at home and time on social media could have been spent more outside of home due to using a mobile device.
Overall the Main influences behind screen Usage is due to University study and Recreational time. The data shows that University prefer to spend more of their free time using a screen even when most of their time at University is dedicated to using a device.

From the data that is displayed above it shows that different screen based activities influence University students lives in many ways. Time spent behind a screen for University work and for recreation are the major influences and from the trends in the data displayed above it shows that both screen usage for University and recreation are balanced. The line chart shows that over the course of the week the balance between screen time for university and recreation is consistant. On certain days there is a spike in screen usage across both recreational influences and University.

The data above presents that majority of a University students recreational time behind a screen is spent on Netflix and gaming where the main devices for these activities are Laptop, Desktop and TV. It also shows a comparison between the screen influences on gender where majority of females use a screen device over males and that Female students prefer to use a laptop and mobile device whilst males prefer using a desktop.
